Giggleswick School Boarding Environment

This heritage building has exceptional modern facilities and a happy, welcoming community.

Brief

The school commissioned us to work with them on the refurbishment of one of their main boarding houses – Nowell House. The Grade II listed building needed complete renovation together with spatial planning and internal reconfiguration to ensure maximum effectiveness of the space. The school also wanted to change the overall layout of the house which involved reconfiguring most of the bedrooms and social spaces. From the washrooms to bedrooms, social spaces to games rooms, the project brief included all aspects of the boarding house.

Challenge

The works were completed during the summer holidays and resulted in a world class boarding environment. Giggleswick School is widely known in the boarding sector, and it was important that the finished environment reflected the school’s ethos and values.

We carried out the replacement of the mechanical & electrical installations in the boarding house, as well as upgrading stairwells, corridors and entranceways to create a consistent design scheme throughout the house. The existing fabric of the building also required remedial repair works and additional structural alterations to ensure compliance with current fire regulations.

Working with the school, we developed an inspirational design scheme for the boarding house. The scheme incorporated a range of finishes, each chosen by our talented designers to create a stunning boarding house design scheme. The use of a variety of different wallpapers in the bedrooms helped to add personality and individuality to each room, and the bedroom furniture was designed to compliment this yet remain consist throughout the house.

Solution

We worked with Giggleswick School on a complete turn-key basis for their boarding house refurbishment project, handling all aspects of the fitout; from strip out through to final furniture manufacture and installation. The design journey involved coordination of all stakeholders, including conservationists, staff and students through the use of specific design workshops both at the school and in our London Design Centre. Additionally, we provided the school with a bespoke exhibition space and mock-up bedroom for them to present the scheme to future parents and students at their Open Day event.

The finished project has dramatically changed the perception of boarding at Giggleswick and has inspired the whole school. The continued positive feedback from staff and students is extremely rewarding and a fitting tribute to the investment the school has made.
