Giggleswick's Brief
One of their main Grade II listed boarding houses – Nowell House needed complete renovation. This included spatial planning with internal reconfiguration to ensure maximum effectiveness including bedrooms and social spaces and to change the boarding house layout. From washrooms to bedrooms, meeting areas to games rooms, the project brief included all aspects of the boarding house.
Our Challenge
The works were completed during the summer holidays and resulted in a world class boarding environment. Giggleswick School is widely known in the boarding sector, and it was important that the finished environment reflected the school’s supportive ethos and values which encourages students to explore talents and skills while developing strengths and character.
We replaced the mechanical and electrical installations, upgraded stairwells, corridors and entranceways throughout. We also carried out remedial repair works and additional structural alterations to ensure compliance with current fire regulations.
We developed an inspirational design scheme for the boarding house with a range of finishes including different wallpapers for personality and individuality. Each finish was chosen by our talented designers to create a stunning boarding house design, with comfortable and durable bedroom furniture ensuring a consistent theme throughout the house to reflect the school’s aspirational feel.
Envoplan's Solution
We handled all aspects of the fitout from strip out through to final furniture manufacture and installation. The design journey involved the coordination of all stakeholders, including conservationists, staff and students. Specific design workshops were held both at the school and in our London Design Centre, with a bespoke exhibition space and a mock-up bedroom for the school to present the scheme to future parents and students at their Open Day event.
The finished project has dramatically changed the perception of boarding at Giggleswick and has inspired the whole school. The continued positive feedback from staff and students is extremely rewarding and a fitting tribute to the investment the school has made.
