The International School Of Nice Science Labs

We partnered with the International School of Nice to design and deliver state-of-the-art science labs—spaces that embody innovation, adaptability, and collaboration, inspiring students and staff alike to explore and thrive in a future-focused learning environment.

The Vision

At the International School of Nice (ISN), creating a state-of-the-art science facility was more than just a renovation project—it was an investment in the future of science education. Partnering with ISN, we aimed to design and deliver science laboratories that embody innovation, adaptability, and collaboration. The project resulted in three distinct, vibrant labs, each tailored to different scientific disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
This transformation not only elevated the teaching and learning experience but also underscored ISN’s commitment to fostering an engaging and future-focused environment.

Designing for Flexibility and Functionality

The project transformed the existing lab spaces from dark and outdated into bright, modern, and versatile environments. Previously limited to two labs, ISN now boasts three dedicated science laboratories, each designed with a distinct colour scheme to align with the subjects they serve: green for Biology, blue for Chemistry and Environmental Science, and orange for Physics.
A key focus of the redesign was flexibility. The labs were equipped with movable tables, modular layouts, and adaptable seating arrangements to accommodate a variety of teaching styles and activities. From project-based learning to group collaboration or focused individual work, the labs can seamlessly adapt to the diverse needs of both students and teachers. This innovative approach ensures the spaces remain functional and relevant as educational demands evolve.

Neuroscience-Informed Design

The integration of neuroscience principles was pivotal in shaping these spaces. Careful attention was paid to lighting, acoustics, and colours to enhance cognitive focus and reduce stress. This approach also supports neurodiverse learners, ensuring every student benefits from the environment.
Mel Curtis, Director of ISN, highlighted the importance of this philosophy, stating, “Learning environment is the third teacher. It’s really, really important that that’s acknowledged. Students now expect modern facilities, and gone are the days that ‘just OK’ is acceptable.”

Collaboration at the Core

A hallmark of this project was its collaborative process. Teachers, staff, and consultants from Noble & Eaton worked closely to ensure the labs met the specific needs of ISN’s curriculum and teaching methodologies. Melanie Laroche, ISN’s Head of Science, emphasised this aspect: “What we really appreciated is that all staff were part of the renovation of the lab. It was an excellent collaboration between Envoplan and the science team.”
This collaborative approach extended to practical details, such as furniture placement and electrical outlet locations, ensuring the final design seamlessly aligned with ISN’s operational needs.

Connecting to a Global Community

As part of the Globe Educate network, ISN benefited from shared expertise and resources. The new labs reflect the institution’s place in this international community, setting a benchmark for modern educational environments across schools in the network.

The Impact

The refurbished labs have profoundly influenced both staff and students. The vibrant and welcoming spaces inspire excitement and pride, creating a “wow effect” from the first moment students walk in. As one student shared, “When I first saw these labs, I thought, ‘this is definitely my favourite classroom.’” The labs also serve as multipurpose spaces, hosting lessons for other departments such as humanities and geography, further enhancing their value to the school community.
Faculty members also note how the new environment supports improved teaching outcomes. Laroche observed, “It’s a huge change. The colors alone make us want to smile, and the flexibility allows us to adapt to each class and project, which has had a positive impact on our results.”
