Charles De Gaulle's Brief
The project scope included a detailed design phase, through to final fit-out and installation. This was a full turn-key project, and was completed within the school holidays.
Our Challenge
We needed to refresh their dining space throughout by making it lighter and brighter with a strong visual theme and improved acoustics. The main challenge was to create an inspirational dining environment which would encourage students to eat healthily and increase awareness of the benefits of good food.
Solution
We involved the head chef and other stakeholders in the design process, with all aspects of the space were considered, ensuring the school developed a definitive theme through a collaborative design process. Design themes considered included a nautical topic, artwork based on the great outdoors and a representation of a French street café scene (the most popular!).
The new dining hall space plan maintained the overall capacity, but with a more spacious feel and better layout. Using different zones within the area helps with managing the flow of students at busy times.
In addition we designed bespoke leaf-shaped acoustic ceiling panels which help to reduce the reverberation of sound, thereby controlling noise levels; and installed stackable chairs, meaning that the dining hall is easy to reconfigure and clean.
To complete the school’s authentic French café-feel we installed replica lampposts and characterful wall graphics. The careful choice of finishes and imagery resulted in an inspirational, memorable yet durable environment for this junior dining hall redesign scheme.
One of the pupils even commented that he felt like he was back home in France!
