The Vision
The new Design and Technology suite was built to give students more space, better access to equipment, and a more engaging environment for hands-on learning. The old room was too small and often overcrowded, limiting what could be taught and how comfortably students could work.
Now, the modular building provides a spacious, purpose-built layout that supports both individual workstations and group demonstrations. Fixed benches line the perimeter, while freestanding worktables can be reconfigured depending on class size or project. Integrated storage for tools and materials keeps the space organised and adaptable.
Special attention was paid to ventilation, lighting, and safety. The new workshop includes robust flooring, fire-resistant materials, and ample power and data points. The large windows and skylights not only support visibility but help maintain an open, comfortable feeling in a room where students are often concentrating on detailed tasks.
bringing the Vision to life
Designed for up to 20 students, the new food tech room is organised to support structured teaching, safe supervision, and efficient movement throughout. Clear sightlines and carefully planned circulation ensure the space functions seamlessly during practical lessons, while maintaining an open and calm working environment.
At the core of the design is a highly considered ventilation and extraction strategy. Specialist systems have been integrated to manage heat, airflow, and odour at source, ensuring consistent air quality and thermal comfort. This technical backbone enables the space to operate intensively while maintaining a controlled, comfortable environment for both the students and the staff.
Designing for Practical Learning
Material selection plays a key role in both performance and atmosphere. Large marble worktops provide durable, hygienic preparation surfaces suited to repeated daily use, while their scale and finish contribute to a clean, contemporary aesthetic that elevates the overall environment.
Workstations are arranged to support a balance of individual and collaborative activity, with clear zoning that allows students to work confidently and safely. The result is a space that feels ordered and professional, yet accessible and engaging.
The Impact
The transformation of this previously utilitarian space has reshaped how food technology is experienced within the school. Now positioned at the centre of student activity, the subject benefits from a purpose-designed environment that supports both technical skill development and a deeper understanding of nutrition.
By integrating the facility within the school’s sports provision, the project enables a more connected approach to health education. The result is a space that not only performs to a high technical standard, but also feels considered, contemporary, and integrated within the everyday life of the school.
